Answers in Columbia SC

Do I need X-rays for chiropractic or ART care?

We are conservative with taking X-rays; however, if clinically indicated, X-rays are recommended for adults needing chiropractic spinal care. Soft tissue / ART patients do not typically need X-rays; soft tissue does not visualize on standard x-rays and is not typically needed for diagnosis or treatment in these cases. If you have outside films or MRI studies available, additional X-rays are often not necessary.

What chiropractic techniques do you offer?

Diversified, Gonstead, Activator, S.O.T., Thompson, Leander Motion Assisted Techniques, Flexion-Distraction, Cox, and Toggle. We use methods that will achieve the best benefit for the patient while being sure you are comfortable.

Is ART a chiropractic technique?

No. It's a specialized method of treating soft tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, nerves, etc.). ART Doctors include MDs, DCs, DOs, as well as some LMTs.

Do I have to get chiropractic care to receive soft tissue / ART care?

No; however, if there are underlying joint problems contributing to the problem, chiropractic care may also be recommended.

Are ART treatments comfortable?

Most patients find it comfortable; however, in acute cases where the soft tissues are inflamed tenderness may be felt but only for a few seconds during the treatment. Many say "It hurts good."

Does insurance cover Soft Tissue / ART or Chiropractic care?

Yes, the treatment is covered by most insurance policies when performed by a Physician. We will verify your insurance coverage benefits for you and file your insurance. We are preferred providers for Blue Cross Blue Shield, Federal & State Employees, Companion, Medicare, Mailhandlers, and others.

How many treatments might be expected?

Many cases get significant relief in 4-6 visits dependent upon how long they have had a problem. Many soft tissue cases resolve in 4-5 treatments and are maintained if they follow their home instructions. Some may need additional care for stability/rehab if theirs is a more significant long-term condition.

How long are treatments after the initial evaluation?

Unlike many clinics where you see the doctor for 5 minutes, our patients, if the prompt for their appointments, spend at least 15 minutes with Dr. Renick - three times as long. Some patients including athletes and complex cases receive 30 minutes of treatment time with Dr. Renick.

Will you recommend stretches, exercises, and ways to prevent re-injury?

Yes, patients will be given home & work instructions to assist their progress and prevent re-injury. ART patients will be given very specific stretches to perform in order to rehabilitate the soft tissue. We also provide rehab in the clinic.

Do you work with athletes?

Yes, ART has become the treatment of choice for athletes. ART is used by Olympic, professional, and amateur athletes all over the US and now growing all over the world. Dr. Renick is ART credentialed in athletic injuries covering every muscle, joint, and soft tissue in the body. Dr. Renick has treated many of the world's best athletes as well as Olympic, nationally ranked, USC, Clemson, and The Citadel athletes. He is an official ART Doctor for Ironman Triathlons including the Ironman Triathlon World Championships in Kona, Hawaii.

Gowning Procedures: Dependent upon the area of the problem, some patients wear a gown for the initial examination and if spinal X-rays are needed. Patients receiving Active Release Therapy do not typically need to wear a gown; however, we often ask patients to bring shorts to change into for knee and hip issues. Most patients are gowned for myofascial, massage therapies, etc.

Do you take referrals from other Doctors and refer to others as well?

Yes, we often receive patient referrals from many Medical Doctors including Orthopedists as well as Chiropractic Doctors. We often work in tandem with your Doctor or Physical Therapist.

We refer to others should your condition not progress as expected or should it seem appropriate. Occasionally, a patient's condition is too advanced for conservative care as we provide; surgical intervention, etc. may be required and we will refer as indicated.
